“Alisha was very attentive and reliable.  She was the
first guest to arrive even though she was the furthest
away.  She was a huge support to me and my family.
She not only helped me through the labor but cared for
my baby and my family when I had to be away for
medical care.  My husband says he couldn't have done
                                                                                      it without Alisha.”

 Dear Perspective Client,

Thank you for your interest in Sacred Passages Doula Care. My hope is that this website will answer many of your questions about myself and my services helping you to determine if you would like to meet with me in a person to person consultation. If you find you still have questions, concerns, or just need clarification please feel free to contact me. I want you to get your needs met.

I would like to share a bit about myself and how I view my work. Since taking my training in September of 2001 I have learned so much as a professional doula. I am sure I will continue to be enriched by this unique and wonderful work. It is my deepest wish that I serve women and their families with integrity, respect, and a deep honoring of each individuals needs, desires, and experience.

People often ask me what it is I do. This question is more difficult to answer than one might expect. What I do is different for each client I work with. Some women want very close contact, several prenatal meetings, my attendance at caregiver visits, educational information, prenatal yoga instruction, or visualization guidance. Some women want to know I will be there for their labor/birth, and little more. Each woman is ultimately unique, as is her labor, her birth, her baby, and her family. It is my desire to honor these differences and tailor my services to best meet my client’s individual

People often ask why I became a doula. There are many reasons, and in choosing to continue this work, my reasons are continually evolving. I started this path because I wanted women to know they have choices in childbirth. I continue because I believe that birth works! I believe in a woman’s inherent power, wisdom, and courage to bring her baby into the world in a way that meets her needs! I believe that this looks different for every woman and it is my job to support a woman in her choices, whatever they may be. Of course I have my own thoughts/feelings about birth, but I seek to balance my feelings with my training, my increasing knowledge and experience, and my belief that for my client the only way to have a baby is her way. It is my job to support my clients in discovering that way! I will not tell a woman what is “right”. I will not tell a woman what is “wrong”. I will share what I know when asked, or when appropriate. If I don’t know the answer I will say so and I will do my best to help my client acquire the information she seeks. I will advocate for my client but I will not be her voice. I hope for my client to see herself as responsible for her own experience, to know that her body, her birth, her baby, are hers and that she alone knows what is “right” for them.

This is not to say that women must “do” it alone. Working with a loving partner, a knowledgeable, supportive caregiver, and a doula are elements that a woman may choose to create the birth she desires, but, ultimately, I believe, it is her choice. Whether or not you choose to work with me my hope is that you will continue to advocate for your unique needs and desires.
